"Liar Liar Pants on Fire"
September 7th ACMEC begins its program year with a presentation by ethicist David Beyda, M.D. Dr. Beyda is an internationally recognized author and speaker on the issue of Truth Telling in Medicine. Dr. Beyda is Chairman of Bioethics at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He will present at 8:00 a.m. at St. Luke's RMC Grand Rounds, 12:15 p.m. at Saint Alphonsus-Nampa Grand Rounds and on September 8, 8:00 a.m. at the VA Medical Center Grand Rounds. We hope you will join us for a thought provoking discussion on how we share information with patients.
Your Privileges VS ACMEC Services
With the many changes of physician privileges from active to courtesy or even the dropping of privileges all together we need to clarify what service ACMEC will provide. Active staff pay full dues to ACMEC which means they get access to regularly scheduled accredited meetings, credit is recorded and CME reports accessible online. Courtesy staff and affiliate staff who do not pay full dues to ACMEC can attend CME programs but their CME is not tracked. Physicians without privileges at one of ACMEC's constituent hospitals do not have their CME tracked. If they attend an accredited conference and want CME they need to request an onsite certificate of attendance and track their own CME. This is also true for NP's, PA's and pharmacists who attend CME sessions.ACMEC does not receive financial support from the Ada County Medical Society or the Idaho Medical Association. Therefore, membership in these organizations does not include services from ACMEC. We encourage your questions regarding service status.

Credit for Less Than One Hour Attendance
The question is asked frequently if you can receive only partial credit if you attend, for example, 15minutes of a 1 hour Grand Rounds. The credit designation for each live activity is determined by measuring formal interaction between faculty and the physician; 60 minutes of physician participation in a certified live activity equals one (1) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™; credit is designated in 15 minute or 0.25 credit increments; accredited CME providers must round to the nearest quarter hour. Physicians should claim credit based on their participation time in 15 minute increments; physicians must round to the nearest quarter hour. We will begin recording credit accordingly. For example,If a conference is scheduled for 45 minutes it should be certified for 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 credit™. If the conference is scheduled for one hour and certified for 1 AMA PRA Category 1 credit™, but the physician only attends for 45 minutes, then the physician should claim 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for his/her participation in the activity.

In 1977 the University of Washington Department of Internal Medicine embarked on an exciting new experiment, a separate residency track outside of Seattle. The Seattle-Boise track, with residents spending their first and third years in Seattle and their second year at the Boise VA, was one of the nation's first primary care internal medicine programs. As of 2010 the Seattle-Boise track had 223 graduates, nearly 1/3 of whom practice in Idaho, and 70% in the WWAMI region.
Now fast forward to 2008. We began to explore and extension of the Boise track due to the maturity of our local training resources, and to help address the physician shortage in Idaho. We created the Boise Internal Medicine residency, with all three years based in Boise. This is the first residency sponsored by UW Graduate Medical Education office, which is based outside of greater Seattle. Eight residents in each training year will spend approximately 70% of their time at the Boise VA and 10% each at St. Luke's Regional Health Care System, Saint Alphonsus Regional Health Care System and "outside" rotations (including Seattle).
The new residency has several novel features: A 50:50 mix of ward and outpatient experiences (unusual for internal medicine); required community-based rotations at offices around the state; a three-year integrated scholarship curriculum (research or quality improvement); a simulator and bedside ultrasound curriculum that covers common inpatient problems; and a "medical home" continuity clinic that includes NP students, pharmacy residents, and housestaff from psychology and psychiatry working together at curriculum and practice.
Our first cohort of eight categorical interns begins their training on July 1st, 2011 and they hail from University of Washington (3), University of Colorado, Stanford, U.T. Southwester, U.T. Galveston and West Virginia University. Many have strong ties to Idaho. We are very excited to welcome this first class of a new era in internal medicine training in Boise?
