November 2007 News

  The September from Hades

In the last 20 years ACMEC has never experienced a month like this past September. Our program year started with our first speaker stuck on the tarmac in San Antonio. The end result was the cancellation of four programs in the first week. It didn't get much better. The keynote for the Annual Burkholder Lecture cancelled, a second speaker for the new program at West Valley Medical Center cancelled, the opening of the new conference center at Saint Alphonsus was postponed forcing a full day conference to the Doubletree Riverside, equipment at Mercy failed twice, and a simulation exercise using mannequins had to be done without the lead physician, then the mannequin came disconnected halfway through the simulation.

We began to wonder if Karma had caught up with us but couldn't figure out where we had gone wrong. October has been better and the addition of a program at West Valley is feeling a little more routine.

We received suggestions to always have a list of physicians that would give talks with little notice or videos on previously recorded programs to replace last minute changes. Our thanks to Dr. Suzanne Allen and Dr. Chris Hahn for their willingness to provide last minute talks in September. We extend the offer to all willing presenters to help with last minute talks. Please contact our office with your interest. Of course, we also request your patience when things go to Hades.

  Thanksgiving

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but just couldn't sleep
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned, the dark meat and white
But I fought the temptation, with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation
The thought of a snack became infatuation
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees…
Happy eating to all, pass the cranberries please.

May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes n' gravy have nary a lump,
May your yams be delicious,
May your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.
