Live Surgical Conference
Our thanks to Dr. Richard Moore and his team at Saint Alphonsus for demonstrating a perfect teaching tool. The technology demonstrated a new era for the use of live surgical procedures to be broadcast to a medical audience for educational purposes. The success of a total knee procedure raises the question and challenges as to what other procedures might fit in a one-hour format and be of interest to the primary care physicians. Please share your thoughts with us.
CME Leadership
The CME enterprise is in a funk about commercial funding and the potential for biased content. We're running scared, and it shows in our chaotic search for solutions.Consider a few recent proposals:
- Change CME program, department, or corporate structure to show that an accredited provider is legally separated from any other affiliated organization that receives funding from pharmaceutical manufacturers. (ACMEC already does this.)
- Eliminate the business development title for CME provider employees responsible for identifying educational gaps and seeking CME grant funding. (Done)
- Disqualify some education providers from receiving additional pharmaceutical grants, because there providers receive "too much" of their revenues from commercial interest grant funding already. (Done)
- Eliminate commission-based compensation for employees who seek grants for certified education. (Done)
- Scrap pharmaceutical CME grant funding altogether. (Down to 20% of Grand Rounds funded.)
All CME providers (university, hospital, medical education company, professional society, and state medical society) are in the education business. When the viability of a business depends on maintenance of accreditation, an organization can choose either to abide by the rules or go out of business. We chose to abide but not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

After flight, UPS pilots fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet', which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.
Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.
P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
P: Something loose in cockpit.
P: Dead bugs on windshield.
P: Auto pilot in altitude hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
P: Suspected crack in windshield.
P: Number 3 engine missing.
P: Aircraft handles funny.
P: Target radar hums.
P: Mouse in cockpit.
And the best one for last…
By the way, UPS is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.
